Los Angeles CNN —After Ben Affleck appeared as a Dunkin’ drive-thru worker in a Super Bowl commercial last year, the breakfast chain’s sales exploded. “They sold more donuts the next day than any other day in their history,” an individual close to the Dunkin’ Super Bowl campaign told CNN. Affleck was paid close to $10 million dollars for last year’s Dunkin’ Super Bowl commercial, three sources with knowledge of the partnership told CNN. It’s rare for someone that you think of as a true movie star to be paid less than a million.”Most Super Bowl shoots are usually one to two days, the agent added. Even though we’ve got over 30 celebrities in the Super Bowl this year, we had over 70 offers.

ILWACO, Wash. (AP) — A fire at a port building along the coast in Washington state destroyed more than 1,000 crab pots just ahead of the state's commercial Dungeness crab season, which opens Feb. 1. The remote area of the fire made it difficult to get enough water supply to fight the blaze, the Ilwaco Fire Department said in a Tuesday statement. About 8,500 crab pots on the deck surrounding the building made fighting the fire even more difficult, officials said. Heather Hall from the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife said the agency would do what they could to help crabbers who lost gear. The Washington Department of Ecology helped mitigate any potential environmental concerns from fire debris in the Columbia River on Tuesday.

Board members from Hollywood's actors union voted Friday to approve the deal with studios that ended their strike after nearly four months. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists' executive director and chief negotiator, announced at an afternoon news conference that it was approved with 86% of the vote. The successful vote from the board, whose members include actors Billy Porter, Jennifer Beals, Sean Astin and Sharon Stone, was entirely expected, as many of the same people were on the committee that negotiated it. In the wake of the announcement of a tentative deal, actors were largely optimistic about what their leaders have won for them, but their reaction to the details will be important. The last screen actors strike, in 1980, had a rocky ending, with many members opposing the contract.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Months after withdrawing from a data-sharing interstate compact to fight voter fraud, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin's administration on Wednesday announced a series of recent steps it has taken to improve the accuracy of the state's voter rolls. Among them is the launch of new, individual data-sharing agreements with five other states and Washington, D.C., the Virginia Department of Elections said in a news release. “Secure elections start with accurate voter lists,” Elections Commissioner Susan Beals said Wednesday, two days before the start of early voting in this year's legislative elections. Virginia voters can check their registration status online.

Member states of the Electronic Registration Information Center, or ERIC, partnership share voter registration and identification data to avoid having people registered to vote in multiple states. There are now only seven Republican-led states among the 25 remaining in the compact. Many Republican-led states have also tightened voting rules in recent years in what they describe as an effort to prevent fraud. "It really exposes the hypocrisy of states that are talking the most about voter fraud," Clapman said. "They're inflating concerns about voter fraud and are also pulling out of and damaging the best tool that states have to detect voter fraud."

[1/5] Displaced Syrians who lost their homes during the earthquake set up tents in a school yard, in the aftermath of a deadly earthquake, in rebel-held town of Harem, Syria February 13, 2023. Now his home there is gone too, destroyed in another catastrophe, this time made by nature rather than man. The quake killed at least 4,400 people in Syria's northwest, leaving millions needing aid, according to the United Nations. Firewood lies stacked in a pile beside newly-hoisted tents while children play, taking turns sliding down a stone slope. The setup is meant to be temporary, but in this part of Syria many have lived this way for years.

Mamadi Doumbouya for The New York Times Talk Walter Mosley Thinks America Is Getting DumberWalter Mosley is best known as one of contemporary literature’s pre-eminent crime novelists, but he’s actually four or five different writers rolled into one. You have to tell stories about real people experiencing it and not real people with a Ph.D. People who are not stupid but ignorant, who don’t know things about the world. There are people who don’t know how to spell, they don’t know how to think. You have these people coming out into the world, and they don’t know what to do. That’s going to happen.
Curaleaf cut about 220 staff members in November. The company sent laid-off employees an exit survey asking why they left. Curaleaf's cuts come as the cannabis industry falls on hard times. Here's what the email looks like:A screenshot of Curaleaf's exit survey sent to Insider. Jeremy Berke/ ScreenshotAnd here's the question:Curaleaf exit survey.
Cannabis tech firm Weedmaps is cutting up to 25% of employees, according to a filing. The company told Insider that the majority of the cuts were made last week. Weedmaps CEO Chris Beals stepped down on November 7 and Doug Francis, a Weedmaps cofounder, is running the company on an interim basis. Weedmaps lists cannabis shops on its site, allowing consumers to browse dispensaries and see reviews of marijuana products. Weedmaps is far from the only cannabis company to lay off employees in recent months.
Curaleaf laid off staff in November, Insider has learned. In a statement to Insider, Curaleaf said the cuts were "a part of an effort to control costs and drive efficiencies in the face of economic uncertainties ahead." Darin, who took over the top job in May, said Curaleaf was in discussions with unionized employees at affected Curaleaf locations. From public giants to small startups, cannabis companies are falling on hard times. Like other industries, cannabis companies have been contending with broader trends like rising inflation.
Irene Cara, the Oscar-winning musician best known for singing the title tracks to the movies “Fame” and “Flashdance” has died, her publicist said Saturday. “It is with profound sadness that on behalf of her family I announce the passing of Irene Cara,” her publicist Judith A. Moose said in a statement posted to Cara’s website and Twitter feed. “The Academy Award winning actress, singer, songwriter and producer passed away in her Florida home. Her cause of death is currently unknown and will be released when information is available,” she said. She later appeared in films such as “D.C.
‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’Even before making its way to theaters, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” — the long-awaited sequel to the 2018 film starring Chadwick Boseman — has birthed some of this fall’s biggest pop culture moments, including a Rihanna song drop. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” opens in U.S. theaters Nov. 11. “The Inspection” opens in U.S. theaters Nov. 18. “Bones and All” opens in U.S. theaters Nov. 23. “Strange World” opens in U.S. theaters Nov. 23.
CNN —“Luckiest Girl Alive” has a lot going on, in a way that undermines the movie’s translation from book to screen. Mila Kunis produces and stars in this #MeToo-tinged story, which awkwardly incorporates a mass school shooting as well as gender and class politics into what becomes an ungainly mix of hot-button issues in one dramatic package. As the handsomely clueless Luke puts it, why address “this thing that happened to you so long ago.”Mila Kunis in the Netflix movie 'Luckiest Girl Alive.' But “Luckiest Girl Alive” falls short of its promise, a reminder that, however ironic the title is intended to be, fortune tends to favor the bold. “Luckiest Girl Alive” premieres October 7 on Netflix.
He announced pardons for federal cannabis possession and ordered a review of how cannabis is scheduled. While Biden's announcement stopped far short of decriminalization, he outlined three key steps:He's pardoning people federally convicted of simple cannabis possession. Biden's announcement signals that his administration — quiet on cannabis until now — will finally push for federal cannabis reform. Stifel analyst Andrew Partheniou called Biden's announcement "the most important development in US cannabis history," in a Friday morning note. If the government decides to regulate cannabis like a pharmaceutical, that could undermine the recreational cannabis industry as it currently stands.
Cannabis companies from startups to public giants are laying off employees as sales slow. The cannabis industry is in a full-on downturn. Cannabis companies also don't have access to much of the nuts-and-bolts of the banking system like their non-cannabis counterparts. Investment into cannabis companies has dried upThe spigot has slowed to a trickle on the once-plentiful venture-capital and private-equity firehose of investment into cannabis startups. Hauser said that capital for cannabis companies is only getting more expensive and more elusive.
Curaleaf is cutting about 50 jobs and will close a facility in Sacramento, Insider learned. The job cuts come as legal cannabis sales slow in California's competitive market. Curaleaf, which cultivates and sells cannabis in multiple US states, notified California sales staff of layoffs on August 9, and plans to shutter its Sacramento facility, the company told Insider. The sales staff were all working remotely, and the Sacramento facility will wind down operations by the end of the year, the company said. Earlier this month in New York, Curaleaf pulled thousands of cannabis products from medical dispensary shelves after a NY Cannabis Insider investigation found that the potency was mislabeled.
Nasdaq-listed shares have dropped over 55% this year, as legal cannabis sales have slowed and broader economic shocks have hit the market. Read the full memo from Weedmaps CEO Chris Beals here:Dear Weedmappers:This is a tough email to write. By many measures, our growth for the last few quarters has been strong, and we outpaced the growth of legal cannabis markets by a significant margin. We have also been conducting active, ongoing rationalization of investment areas (e.g Weedmaps Exchange, Weedmaps Retail). The future continues to get brighter for cannabis legalization, and the growth opportunity for Weedmaps is outsized with new cannabis markets and new cannabis licenses ahead.
